Government Affairs of the Home Builders Association of Spartanburg, SC

The HBA Government Relations Program generated a high rate of return for the home builders of our state in 2007: -$277.65 million! HBA members got a 10-to-1 return on their membership dues investment this year!

To quantify all of the legislative talk from last month’s report, it seemed helpful to assign a dollar amount for projected annual benefit to each piece of legislation. The following bills will have a positive impact on the home building industry, reduce regulatory/legal barriers for home builders and put more money in home builders’ pockets, and here’s how:

Workers’ Comp Reform/Second Injury Fund: The anticipated annual savings in insurance premiums alone ($596) is enough to pay HBA annual member dues!

Annual Benefit: $150 million

Other legislation affecting our industry Projected Annual Benefit
Ethics Reform $1.5 million
Coastal Insurance $2+ million
Roads $75,000
Port Expansion $7.5 million
DHEC Board Appointees $1 million
Building Codes $1 million
Affordable Housing Trust Fund $750,000
Immigration $500,000
Septic Tank/Sewers $1.2 million
Impact Fees $100 million
Inclusionary Zoning $10 million
Priority Investment Act $250,000
Restrictive Covenants $250,000
Property Tax Reform $750,000
Green Building $200,000

TOTAL RETURN ON INVESTMENT FOR HOME BUILDERS: $277.65 million!!

If your membership is up for renewal soon, ask yourself this, “Can I afford NOT to be a member of the HBA?”, and if you know someone whose membership has lapsed, take them this article and ask them the same question!!
